Everyone is in the business of brand building these days. Executives, entrepreneurs, business owners and content creators have to continuously evolve their image. This is why personal brand photography can be so critical, so when it comes to wardrobe styling I get this question a lot “What do I wear for my photoshoot”? Because when you can nail the look, you’ll nail the shots. Here are four key considerations I take into account when putting together shoot looks for clients.
- What is the feeling you want to convey with your personal brand? Someone who is a florist will likely take a different approach to their look than a doctor, yet every florist’s perception of their brand will also differ. What makes us unique is what makes us special and we want our wardrobe selection to speak about who you are. So you can be an edgy florist or a light/bright/fun florist – there is no one direction.
- Where is the location of your shoot? Why does this matter? Because shooting in a studio standing against a white wall is a much different vibe than behind a computer desk or outside on a street or in nature. I love to know the location as well as the poses, to know what kind of movement we can see from the clothing and if accessories (hats, bags, glassware etc) will potentially come into play.
- Coloring and fit is key. Most people think black is a “safe” option to make them look slimmer, but often we see black can cast shadows and age you if its too close to the face. I like to think about what colors naturally flatter a clients complexion, as well as what colors they use in their business/branding to date. And never try to hide behind baggy clothing to distract from your body shape. You need to work with this and not against it, always highlighting your best assets. Taking this all into account can help determine a palette & cuts that will rock on camera.
- Be the fiercest version of you. This is not the time to abandon your old style completely but rather put some real consideration into your looks for the shoot so you can really show up the best version of yourself. If you typically default to very classic pieces, what can we do to turn that up a notch? Safe often equals boring which is forgettable. Maybe it’s as simple as a third layer like bold, chunky jewelry.
Whatever you wear, make sure if feels authentically you. The camera will feel that energy and you will be that much more excited for your shoot and comfortable on set. Just make sure before you invest in personal brand photography you stop and ask yourself, “what does my style say about my story?”
