Coming off these dark winter months where we definitely saw a trend towards gray scale and monochromatic neutrals, our clients can sometimes feel intimidated by the how and where to add color into their wardrobes. But the good news is that adding brights and pastels are also totally on trend right now and you don’t have to stick with a specific look all the time. Take it from me, I often dress based off my mood and color is often the number one factor in that scenario.
As a self professed color nerd, I’ve been trained in the Pantone system and have studied not only what colors can do for our complexions but the psychology behind certain ones. Color is one way we can add visual interest to our environment and command attention (or blend in) with our clothing. This often produces a “dopamine effect” and when we wear the right colors for us has a positive impact in our outward presence.
HERE ARE MY TOP 5 WAYS TO BRING A LITTLE COLOR INTO YOUR (FASHION) LIFE:
- JUST A POP: If you struggle with adding color go with an accessory in a color such as a shoe, handbag, hat etc. Keep the rest of your look relatively neutral
- WHEN IN DOUBT, DEFAULT: to the colors and shades that typically look good on most people. This includes classic red, navy blue, dark turquoise, forest green and burgundy and several others we consider “safe” non-neutrals.
- DETERMINE YOUR COLORS: These are specific to you and work naturally with your complexion. We all have certain shades that look best against our hair and skin, while others can wash us out. Understanding your color schematic (cool, warm, soft, etc.) will help you shop for pieces that you know will look flattering and light you up.
- MIX & MASTER: Once you get comfortable with color, you can begin to play with it. Think about the color wheel when mixing colors and stick to certain formulas when mixing colors. Stick with opposites (mustard and navy), stay close in the color family (red & pink) or opt for a more monochromatic look of shades in variation (violet and lavender for example).
- THINK ABOUT COLOR DIFFERENTLY: There are so many ways to incorporate color right now. Pastels, neon, metallics, prints etc. so while keeping in mind what looks flattering on you, also keep in mind what is going to get you excited for dressing and that will go a long way in how you wear it.
