THE NYFW ROUND UP

With the FA 23-24 NYFW wrapping this week, we’ve compiled our top takeaways from all the designer runway shows to give you an idea of where luxury shopping will be heading later this year. 

Here are FIVE of the overarching trends we dissected across collections:

THE POWER SHOULDER at Thom Browne & Prabal Gurung.  Exaggerated, structured shoulders on jackets, puffy tulle sleeves and accentuated fabric draped down the shoulder were prominently displayed.  As it ranges from soft to futuristic in feeling, it can be incredibly versatile to try in daily wear and helps to balance some of the wider bottom trends we have seen.

THE EVERYDAY SUIT at Simkai & Brandon Maxwell.  Traditional suiting is back in timeless colors and patterns like black, tan, navy, pinstripe and plaid.  Take a new twist on this by trying a short suit dress as seen at Simkai in a black and white tweed or try a full three piece suit with a vest under your jacket. Play up with accessories like a menswear tie or a statement belt to finish it off.

BRIGHT MONOCHROMATIC at Alice + Olivia & Sergio Hudson.  Monochromatic has been having a moment for some time but we are seeing designers doubling down on this.  Think bright yellow, red, green and blue primary colors from head to toe, including shoes and handbags as accessories.  While this is a statement look, it is pleasing to the eye creating one long line of continuous color. 

EDGE REIMAGINED at Rodarte & Khaite.  Rodarte featured a gothic glam collection with the dominance of black bell sleeves, lace gloves and bonnets with edgy black makeup to match that felt very 1920’s.  Khaite displayed equally edgy looks in full leather ensembles and floor length coats finished off with slicked back hair and sunglasses.  

TURN ON THE TEXTURE at Proenza Schouler & Jason Wu.  Fringe, lace, leather, metallics and tweed – need I even say more?  We saw this in combination of one another across many runway looks for a very maximalist vibe.  The juxtaposition between soft/hard and fluid/structured materials is often a great way to add visual interest to an outfit.
