Lately I’ve questioning if social media is still a source of inspiration for me or a just platform in which we are influenced to blindly follow trends and quickly hit add to cart?
I’m a girl who grew up waiting with anticipation for every fashion magazine’s monthly issue to drop so I could run out and grab it. I had a fascination reading about designers, how to wear certain pieces and being able to interpret the latest fashion for myself. I remember being so thoughtful about which trends felt right to me, especially given the modest budget I spent on clothing at the time. I lived in my own little bubble back then of what felt “hot or not”.
I’m not knocking social media or influencers and I think it can be a great source for creativity in fashion. But I also believe it’s created a never-ending black hole of following a new trend every week or worse, losing your own unique style because you’re adapting to what “looks good” or fits into a mold. The quiet luxury, minimalistic style just isn’t me, but I was even questioning at times, should I be dressing more “on trend”? Quick answer – NO. But if I’m even thinking this, what must others think who are already confused around their style be feeling?
What I didn’t do during this time is run out and get a bunch of new clothes. It is NOT the time to go on a shopping spree when you’re feeling unsure or uninspired. Buying more “stuff” is rarely the issue, what you really need is to understand your own style better and define your goals. I do believe it’s important to experiment with trends and make choices around which ones to lean into. But going from clean girl to a full-on mob wife in a week’s span is actually going to leave you and your closet confused. What we view can become how we act, look, what we buy and if you don’t step back and ask yourself “is this really me?” you may end up feeling lost.
I have a deep appreciation for fashion as art and look at it impartially for each client I work with. You won’t see me wearing bows in my hair, shopping at LoveShackFancy and I actually hated Barbiecore. That doesn’t mean I don’t love that for YOU. My job as is to be knowledgeable about colors, cuts, brands, retailers, and trends and together we define what that looks like for YOUR wardrobe.
It is totally OK and normal to go through a “style rut”. Wait for that spark to come back or work with a stylist who can help you come up with ideas. But remember, the only person’s approval you need to be seeking at the end of the day, is your own.
As always, I’d love to connect with you about your style goals. CLICK HERE to set up a complimentary call on my calendar.
