Many clients come to us with the frustration of where to shop. Options are pretty limited in Boston, and forget it if you’re living in the burbs.
Here’s the brutal truth.
There’s been a lot of changes in retail the past 5 years and it’s led to this: the closing of luxury department stores (2 Nordstrom stores alone closed in Q1 in Boston), reduction of knowledgeable staff/inventory/sizing and billions of clothing skus to comb through on the internet. It’s a whole new world folks, and I’m breaking it down why it’s so hard today (*hint* it’s not just you!)
- The Death of Retail Therapy: Gone are the days when you could casually pop into a store for a “pick-me-up” shopping spree. The personalized in-store experience has fundamentally changed. Limited inventory, lack of experienced retail experts & sizing issues has made finding those special pieces in store next to impossible.
- A Wardrobe Identity Crisis: People now have fashion schizophrenia, struggling to rebuild their wardrobes with new realities after living in casual wear during the pandemic. Your wardrobe now requires versatile pieces that transition between home, office, and social settings. The vision on how style it together for your lifestyle today is key but can feel overwhelming.
- The Age of Digital Fatigue: A majority of people just don’t want to spend their limited free time scrolling for clothes. With online returns up 65%, you’re on the hamster wheel of buying and returning. Or adding a bunch of items to cart only to completely second guess yourself and never pull the trigger. If you don’t know what you’re looking for, the internet is a black hole.
- Social Media vs. Reality: You buy the same pieces you saw on an influencer only to discover they look nothing like it on you. That micro-mini was designed for someone with the dimensions of a doll. The bag you got couldn’t fit anything in it except a single AirPod and half a credit card. The gap between social media and reality has only added to frustration.
- Conscious Consumption: Today we need to focus more than ever on VALUE. Fast fashion and overconsumption are not the answer to better style, yet you find yourself stuck in this pattern. Unless you’re an expert, finding the right brands, getting a good ROI and choosing pieces that are a self-reflection of you and your brand is often out of reach.
