As a personal stylist living in Boston who helps clients transform their relationship with clothing, fashion can be often overlooked. In a city that is known for its education, tech industry and progressive influence – some people assume that their intelligence and capabilities will speak for itself and that caring about what you wear is frivolous, vain or materialistic.
But this is a common misconception.
I’m challenging this narrative and sharing why fashion deserves to be recognized as the powerful form of personal empowerment that it is.
Fashion as Communication
Every morning you make a decision about how you’ll present yourself to the world. Fashion is a visual language.
When a client walks into a job interview in a well-fitted suit, they’re not just wearing expensive fabric—they’re communicating competence, attention to detail, and respect for the opportunity. When someone chooses sustainable brands, they’re expressing their values. When someone wears a cultural garment, they’re honoring heritage and identity.
Fashion isn’t frivolous; it’s fundamental human communication.
The Psychology of Dressing
The relationship between clothing and psychology runs deep. The concept of “enclothed cognition” describes how what we wear influences how we think and behave. When my clients dress in outfits that align with how they want to feel, I witness remarkable transformations in their confidence and willingness to engage with the world.
There is even a concept of Dopamine Dressing – a proven rise of dopamine when you look in the mirror and are pleased with your outfit.
This isn’t vanity—it’s using external tools to support internal wellbeing.
Beyond Consumerism
Yes, the fashion industry has problems with consumerism, environmental impact, and exclusionary practices. But to dismiss the entire concept of personal style because of industry shortcomings misses the point entirely.
Thoughtful, intentional fashion is the opposite of mindless consumption. It’s about curating fewer, better pieces that truly serve you. It’s about understanding your authentic aesthetic rather than chasing trends. It’s about making conscious choices that align with your values, whether that’s sustainability, ethical production, supporting small businesses, or simply expressing your unique perspective.
The Democratization of Style
Social media has amplified diverse voices in fashion.
Style is no longer dictated exclusively by elite fashion houses or magazine editors. It belongs to everyone, and this democratization has transformed it from an exclusive luxury into a tool for collective self-expression and empowerment.
Finding Your Authentic Style
If you’ve dismissed fashion as frivolous in the past, I invite you to reframe your relationship with clothing. Ask yourself: What do I want my style to communicate? What makes me feel most confident and comfortable in my skin? What values do I want my clothing choices to reflect?
Fashion isn’t vain when approached with intention and authenticity. It’s a powerful form of self-expression, a tool for confidence, and a daily opportunity to present your truest self to the world. And there’s nothing superficial about that.
