With Spring brings a renewed sense of energy and reinvention into our lives and wardrobes. But any time the season changes especially in New England, the weather seems to be all over the map not only day to day but hour to hour. It’s important to not only consider the temps but also to look seasonally appropriate, which is trickier that it sounds for some. The key is to leverage the right fabrics, pieces and find balance. Here are some of my top tips for dressing during the transitional months.
- Start mixing back in your lighter fabrics and retire your heavy ones. I always store my super wintery items during spring and I try to stay away from extremes on either end – no white linen and no thick wool sweaters. You can bring out white denim for example, but make sure you are styling with a light knit or leather jacket. This is where balance in your outfit comes into play.
- Seasonal layering is key. A denim or leather jacket, timeless trench and/or blazers are a must. For a more on trend look, try a version of the popular bomber or puffer vest. These can be thrown on over athleisure, casual jeans & tee or on top of a dress. On colder days these pieces can also be used together, just make sure the outer layer length is the longest and bulkiest as a general rule.
- Weed out darker looks and steer towards lighter shades of tan, gray and beige when wearing neutral hues. This is the time to start incorporating more color as well which will be huge for spring. From shocking neons to pastels there is so much variation to choose from, just make sure you understand which ones flatter your omplexion and stay away from pairing colors with black which can look too jarring or 80’s. I’m personally loving some of the softer colors like lavender that are having a major moment.
- Don’t forget footwear! Retire the heavy black boots and flip flops only belong at the beach. So think shoes that fall in between these and can carry you from spring into summer. The classic white sneaker, loafer, pointy pump and chunky platform sandal are all good examples of footwear that can be rocked through a range of temps.
- And when in doubt, lean for the all-season pieces in your wardrobe as your foundations. A longer maxi skirt, button down shirt, elevated sweatshirt, a great pair of jeans or trousers are great examples. These tend to be classics within your capsule wardrobe that you can always accessorize with more trendy pieces for a chic, effortless look.
Spring is always one of my favorite seasons to reassess our clothing and style. If you’re looking for some more one on one guidance, I would recommend you get started with a closet edit and book your consult HERE.
