As I educate clients on elevating their own style, here are some of my key pieces of advice to keep in mind to ensure you look polished and put together when shopping and dressing.
SHOP high quality staples that will last many seasons. You immediately look inexpensive if you choose pieces that are constructed with thin, flimsy fabrics or look stretched out. Invest in good basics: suiting, denim and even tee shirts. They not only will have a thicker, more structured look but will fall much more flattering on the body and last longer. Some of my favorite brands for timeless staples are ALC, ATM, Theory and Vince.
FIND ways to add a layer. Layering is key to a put together look. You can think of this from a traditional standpoint by adding a statement jacket or sweater over your look. I also consider accessories a “third layer” especially in warmer months. You can belt a blazer, stack jewelry or top of your outfit with a hat and still achieve a similar effect.
DRESS and know your body type. We typically fall into one of five body archetypes. Discovering your shape and finding complementary outfits to balance is important. Stick to the proportions and cuts that are ideal for you.
WEAR properly fitting outfits. Getting your correct sizing down is one thing, but taking into account how the items you are putting together is another part of the puzzle. Does your dress stop at the most flattering part of your leg? Are your pants hitting your shoe at the right spot, or do you need to consider a higher or lower heel? Make sure hemlines are on point and if not, I always recommend tailoring or custom for a more elevated fit.
DEFINE your core style. Pull out five of your favorite pieces from your closet and study them. Are they colorful, neutrals, printed, flowy or masculine? Use this as a guide to craft a style profile for yourself and shop/style the brands that are reflective of this. It is easy to get distracted by impulsive shopping and trends, but trends should always be secondary.
